A staff of three audiology support personnel, under the supervision of our licensed educational audiologist, work in the community to screen approximately 50,000 school children annually. Working closely with school nurses at each site, these three staff members travel to all public schools (including charter schools), parochial, private and special education schools throughout Rhode Island every day to screen children (ages 3- 9 years) for hearing loss.
Approximately 5% of these children are referred for further diagnosis. About 3-4% of those re-screened are found to have hearing loss, which affects their access to communication and impacts their language and learning progress.
A member of the Audio Technician team and the supervising Educational Audiologist, under whom they work, are bilingual speakers of English and Spanish.
