Audiology

The RISD Audiology Center provides comprehensive audiological testing, free of charge, to all children of our State.

A team of three audiology support personnel, under the supervision of a licensed audiologist, also works in the community to screen approximately 50,000 school children annually. This team travels to every school throughout the State and work closely with school nurses to schedule these screenings. Approximately 4% of these children are referred for further diagnosis annually. About 2% of these children are found to have hearing loss affecting their access to communication and affecting their learning progress.

Children may also receive these audiological services at our Center, located at the RI School for the Deaf at One Corliss Park in Providence. Our Clinic is easily accessible at the front of the School, and parking is plentiful.

Children ages 6 months through high school are welcome to be screened at no charge.

Other consultative services are provided to local school districts in relationship to the habilitation of hearing loss on a fee for service basis. This may include staff training, procurement and proper use of FM systems, recommending acoustical accommodations to maximize learning, or troubleshooting devices, classroom strategies, etc.

School districts should contact Nancy Maguire Heath (nmaguireheath@rideaf.net) to set up an outreach consultation for any student with hearing loss that may need support to thrive in the mainstream school.
